Your recycling and waste collections

Update waste collections week commencing 4 February 2019

The snow last Friday (1 February) caused unsafe driving conditions for our waste trucks so we decided to cancel our waste collections  on that day. We will begin catching up on Monday 4 February. Unfortunately this will have a knock-on effect on collections for the rest of the week.

The Guildhall buildings are now open for hire after extensive refurbishment.

The team which runs the Abbey Cinema in the 1960s extension to the Guildhall and the Unicorn in the Abbey Buildings, is now managing the Guildhall facility on behalf of the Town Council.

The Mouse Hole Cafe at 60!

The Mouse hole café, located in the basement of Abingdon Town Hall, is turning 60 this weekend!

The café is open 10AM- 4PM Saturday 19th January and to celebrate its birthday all hot drinks will be only 60p!!

AAAHS Talk days at Abingdon Museum

Every third Saturday of the month starting in February 2019. Why not come and listen to local expert talk about interesting topics at the museum! Every third Saturday of the month, three talks will take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Each will last 30 minutes and be about a different subject or object in the museum collection.

Please check the museum events programme for themes and time for each talk day.

These are FREE talks and no booking is required.

Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames Charity Dinner

The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Cllr Margaret Crick, is hosting this year’s Charity Dinner on Friday 1st March 2019.

The event is being held to raise money for her two Chosen Charities: Be Free Young Carers and Abingdon Carousal.

The tickets are £45 pp and will include a 3 course-meal and entertainment for the evening.

Calling all Bands for Music in the Park!

Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council are once again organising the popular “Music in the Park” event.  Music in the Park has taken place in the Abbey Grounds every year since its inception as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, attracting large crowds with 3,500 wristbands being made available in the spring. This year Music in the Park takes place in the evening of Saturday 1st June, following on from the popular daytime event, Fun in the Park.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree!

Recycle Your Christmas Tree!

This is a reminder that as usual, now that the Christmas festivities are concluded, you can bring your Christmas tree to the Market Place to be recycled into woodchip.

This annual event takes place on the Saturday after Twelfth Night and this year is scheduled for Saturday 5th January from 9am to 3pm. This service is provided by the Town Council.

The woodchip produced will help to line our woodland pathways and provide compost for allotments and flowerbeds.

Launch of Abingdon-on-Thames cinema announced

The 1960s extension to Abingdon’s Guildhall – known as the Abbey Hall – is being brought back to life with a launch date this December.  The building will be transformed with state-of-the-art projection and surround sound equipment, cinema seating and a finely-stocked bar. Named ‘The Abbey Cinema’, the new venue will be kicking off a run of new releases just in time for Christmas, including Mary Poppins Returns, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Robin Hood and Wreck it Ralph, alongside festive favourites such as It’s a Wonderful Life, The Grinch & Nativity Rocks!.

Warm Home Discount

People who have difficulty paying their energy bills might be able to take advantage of the Warm Home Discount, a new kind of grant offered by the government and energy suppliers. 

The Warm Home Discount is a scheme that provides people on low incomes with a single discount of £140 on their winter electricity bill. (You might be able to get the discount applied to your gas bill instead - contact your supplier to find out.) 

The discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.

Free parking days in the run up to Christmas

Motorists in the Vale of White Horse can enjoy free parking in district council car parks on certain days in the run up to Christmas.

The annual free parking tradition is provided by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils to encourage people to shop locally for their Christmas presents.  The free parking days allocated to each area are agreed with the individual town councils depending on which day would best suit local traders.

Community Grants Scheme

Community Grants Scheme

This is a reminder that Abingdon Town Council have a community grant scheme in place with a budget of £18,000 available for grants for the financial year commencing 1st April 2018 and applications may now be made for funding.

Last year grants were awarded from the Community Grants scheme to 23 different organisations.

Grant applications are considered by the Community Services Committee at its meetings, which take place four times each year. The next meeting takes place 11th December 2018 with a deadline for applications 20th November.
