Flying the Flag for Europe Day

Abingdon Council News - Sun, 05/09/2021 - 10:10

Sunday 9 May marks Europe Day and the Town Council is flying the Flag of the Council of Europe on the County Hall to celebrate this day.

It was Britain's wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill who first publicly suggested the creation of a “Council of Europe” in a BBC radio broadcast in March 1943.

Six years later , in May 1949, the United Kingdom was a founding member of the Council of Europe and the flag which we are flying became its flag in 1955. The UK remain members of the Council of Europe.

Remembering Cllr Jeanette Halliday one year on

Abingdon Council News - Sun, 04/18/2021 - 12:39

A year ago, Cllr Jeanette Halliday passed away on Friday 17th April 2020. Jeanette had been poorly since just after Christmas but her passing came as a great shock to all her friends and colleagues here at the Council and in the wider community of Abingdon.
Jeanette was a Past Mayor, and it is our practice to fly the town flag at half-mast from the Old County Hall (Museum) in these circumstances. At the time the flagpole needed repair and we were unable to fly the flag. Consequently, we are flying the flag at half-mast now to commemorate the anniversary of Jeanettes passing.
